What’s your favourite thing about spring?
Warm weather! I live in Denver, Colorado, which really has beautiful blue skies year round, but winters can be pretty cold and snowy. Our summers are our best-kept secret (shh.)
What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Funny you should ask. I just answered that question on my blog here. But it boils down to 1) my readers and 2) my technology related to writing (I <3 my Sonos system.) I also love to, you know, write.
What’s the worst thing about being a writer?
Hmm. Probably the stress of wondering if this book baby you are lavishing attention, love, and time on will resonate with readers. Once it’s out of my hands I usually relax – I’ve done my best – but it’s hard not to second guess myself as I’m writing each book. It’s also hard to keep my butt in the chair when spring comes and the weather improves. The great outdoors calls…
Tell us more about your books.
Right now I’m revising the last book of my YA fantasy trilogy—the Brilliant Darkness series. It is about Fennel, a Sightless girl of the forest who must collect water for her people while they hide in caves from the Scourge. Fenn has grown up believing her Sightlessness will mysteriously protect her from the swarming flesh-eating creatures, but she is about to find out for herself.
Published books are THE SCOURGE and THE DEFIANCE, and forthcoming, THE FIRE SISTERS. There will also be two novellas in the series; THE KEEPER is currently free, and THE GATHERER will be published shortly. THE SCOURGE was a finalist for the 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Award.
Tell us something interesting about your main character.
She’s blind, and all of the novels are written from her first-person perspective. No visuals!
Coffee or Tea?
Both, but not at the same time. I’d be seriously jittery.
Plotter or Pantser?
I have been a pantser up until recently. I’m making the transition to plotting. I find I write faster and tend to meander less when I have a plot and scene list, and when I’ve thought through what each scene should contribute to the whole story.
What was the last YA book you read?
COURAGE AND OTHER DEMONS by local Denver author, Jill Dougherty. It’s set in Denver! And the novella NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS by Laini Taylor. I loved DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, which I also read recently. I adore her writing and the setting in Prague.
What are your top tips for surviving a bad review?
Take a deep breath and read it for what you can learn from it. Many reviews have kernels (or giant boulders) of truth about my writing or the story. I try to treat them as I do good reviews – I take what I can from them, and appreciate that someone read my books and cared enough about them to say what they thought.
What are your top tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse?
Since my books take place after a zombie apocalypse, I’ve put a lot of thought into this. You’ll have to read them to find out how my characters do it ; )
Where can readers find your books?
Amazon, in print, ebook, and audiobook formats. My novella, THE KEEPER, is also available for free on Kobo. If you happen to be in Denver, you can find print copies at the indie bookstores, The Tattered Cover and The Bookies. Thank you for giving them a try!

I'm also giving away copies of my inspirational, coming of age YA novel The See-Through Leopard on the tour!
About The See-Through Leopard
From the No. 1 bestselling author of Look Behind You, The See-Through Leopard is an inspirational coming of age novel...
Most sixteen-year-old girls are obsessed with their looks, but Jazz Hooper's obsessed for a different reason. After a car accident that kills her mum, Jazz is left with severe facial scars and retreats into a dark depression.
Fearing what will happen if Jazz doesn't recover, her dad makes a drastic decision to move them from England to a game reserve in Kenya for a new start. And when Jazz finds an orphaned leopard cub, it sets off a chain of events that lead her on a two year journey of discovery, healing, and love.
"A percentage of the royalties from the sale of this book will be contributed to Panthera, a leading international conservation organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the world's big cats, plus other wildlife conservation groups." -- Sibel Hodge, Author
