With all the bad press following the use of mobile phones in recent years, it’s interesting that a study to be published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease has shown that using a mobile phone could actually protect against Alzheimer’s Disease or even reverse it's affects.

Studies are still at an early stage, but according to Dr Susanne Sorensen, Head of Reasearch at the Alzheimer’s Society, the results are both exciting and convincing.

Last year, British scientists made a huge breakthrough by identifying the genes responsible for 1 in 5 cases of Alzheimer’s. The research also highlighted the possibility that Alzheimer’s may be a result of inflammation in the brain, which could mean that common anti-inflammatory drugs will be used in treatment or prevention of the disease.

An estimated 5.2 million Americans and 400,000 Britons suffer from Alzheimer’s but research into dementia is severely underfunded. Hopefully these new studies will kick-start further scientific advances in this debilitating disease.

Will the elderly population be buying more mobile phones than the younger generation in the future? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
